Words for Production

1. acknowledge

The idea that alcohol is linked to liver cancer has been readily acknowledged by doctors around the world.

‧喝酒會引發肝癌,這一點已經全世界的醫生認定。

acknowledgement

There has been a public acknowledgment by the government that its strategy has failed. Now, the government is working on a better plan.

‧政府已公開坦承策略失敗,目前正設法想出一個較好的計畫。

2. abuse

Tony shouted abuse at the waitress who had accidentally spilled coffee on his white shirt.

‧女服務生不小心把咖啡灑在Tony穿的白襯衫上,Tony就對她破口大罵。

While enjoying the right to freedom of speech, every individual should watch out for the abuse of it.

‧在享有言論自由之餘,每個人應該注意不要濫用這項權利。

abuse

The customer verbally abused the salesperson for the company’s considerable delay in delivering the goods.

3. anticipate

Allen was disappointed at the big-budget movie because it wasn’t as good as he had anticipated it to be.

4. assault

This essay was an assault on the government’s huge cuts in local public expenditure. Apparently, the author strongly disapproved of this policy.

The armed gang beat up several clerks while they were robbing the bank. Accordingly, they were charged with robbery and assault.

歹徒持槍搶銀行,還痛毆了數名銀行行員,因此遭控搶劫及傷害罪。

6. harass

Employees should never endure being harassed by peers or superiors. They should report this kind of incident to the Department of Labor for justice.

7. scold

9. expose

Having long been exposed to an extremely noisy working environment, Ms. Miller’s hearing is now badly damaged.

‧長期暴露在極度嘈雜的工作環境下,Miller女士的聽力現在嚴重受損。

The workers dug up the floor to expose the problems with the water pipes there.

10. plague

13. disabled

Idioms and Phrases

1. point of view

From an ecological point of view, the discovery of hundreds of new species in

Papua New Guinea implies that habitats can change.

‧科學家在巴布亞紐幾內亞發現了不少新物種,可見以生態的角度來說,生

物的棲息地是會改變的。

Children often find it hard to see things from their parents’ points of view.

‧做子女的常搞不懂家長看事情的觀點為什麼會那樣。

2. tell someone off

The teacher told the student off for threatening some of his classmates with

violence.

‧這名學生以暴力脅迫同學,老師因此訓了他一頓。

3. at times

Justin is a moody person. At times he seems nice, but he can come across as very

cold and distant, too.

Justin的脾氣陰晴不定,有時候人很好,有時候卻又顯得冷若冰霜。

4. run a risk of (doing) something

Firefighters run a higher risk of losing their own lives at work than most people

in other professions do.
