Writing Hands-on
How people see us is often due to the way we see ourselves. A psychological study shows that people who had been told that they had gruesome scars on their cheeks reported that others kept on looking at their scars and were unfriendly to them. In fact, there were no scars on their faces at all. Their feeling came from assumptions, and this is the result of a sense of inferiority.
A sense of inferiority is closely related to the environment in which one grows up. If children are continually criticized, they tend to start to disapprove of themselves and lose their confidence. What’s worse, they are likely to shrink back from meeting people and often become unpopular as a result. Positive remarks, on the other hand, increase self-esteem. Lena Maria, born with only one leg and without upper limbs, lives a happy life because of her parents’ love and encouragement.
We are what we think. As long as we embrace ourselves and regard ourselves as being worthy, no scars or physical defects can ever hurt us.
